Among the public roles he has taken on, he has chaired the Cayman Medical and Dental Council and served as Chairperson of the Health Practice Commission.

Did you know?

Small, true things from the world's public health authorities. General information, not medical advice for you: for that, talk to your doctor.

  1. Most people with high blood pressure don't feel any symptoms. An estimated 600 million adults who have it, 44 in every 100, don't know.

    Source: World Health Organization, Hypertension

  2. Adults are advised to eat less than 5 g of salt a day, just under a teaspoon. The world average is about 11 g.

Source: World Health Organization, Sodium reduction

  3. The mosquito that spreads dengue prefers to lay its eggs in containers of standing water around homes. Cover water tanks and tip out what collects.

Source: Pan American Health Organization, Dengue

  4. Look for sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and 4-star UVA protection, and reapply about every 2 hours.

Source: NHS, Sunscreen and sun safety

  5. Type 2 diabetes is often preventable. A healthy diet, regular activity, a healthy weight and avoiding tobacco help prevent or delay it.

    Source: World Health Organization, Diabetes

  6. Four conditions (cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes) caused between 39 and 67 of every 100 deaths across 22 Caribbean countries and territories (1999-2014).

Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds: humming “Happy Birthday” twice is about right (US CDC, Clean Hands). Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week; nearly one adult in three worldwide doesn't get it (World Health Organization, Physical activity). Adults aged 18 to 60 need 7 or more hours of sleep a night (US CDC, About Sleep).
